Net Zero Isle of Man’s Sustainable Travel Guide for Employers
17 September 2025

As part of the Isle of Man’s commitment to sustainability, Net Zero Isle of Man has published a comprehensive guide to help employers encourage sustainable travel among their staff. With nearly 30,000 residents commuting to work and 84% driving, the guide offers actionable strategies to reduce emissions, improve employee wellbeing, and support business resilience.
What is sustainable travel?
Sustainable travel avoids personal fossil fuel-powered transport like cars and motorcycles. It includes walking, cycling, public transport, and car sharing, especially within towns like Douglas and Ramsey where most residents work locally.
Why promote it?
- Health & wellbeing: Active commuters report better fitness and fewer sick days.
- Productivity & retention: Healthier staff are more productive and less likely to leave.
- Cost savings: Cycling can save up to £750/year; car sharing over £1,000/year.
- Attracting talent: Gen Z and Millennials value strong environmental policies.
- Resilience & accessibility: Supports staff without cars or reliable transport.
- Reduced parking pressure: Fewer cars mean lower infrastructure costs.
- Lower emissions: Transport accounts for 25% of the Island’s emissions.
