Memory Lane Games took advantage of the Manx Internship programme to receive additional resource to work on software development. Both host, Bruce Elliot, and intern, Reece Carey, spoke about their experience below.
Why did you apply to take on an intern?
The programme provided the perfect opportunity to help upskill recent university graduates who are absolutely desperate for work, and are so talented. It also allowed us to evaluate local talent, risk-free, to assist us as we are growing.
How did your intern help your business?
Talent. We gave them important, interesting work and they all stepped up. It was great to see. They helped us scale up at a critical time in our business.
How did the outcome of the internship compare to your initial expectations?
We had high expectations going in and those were exceeded. We plan to make full-time job offers to two of our interns, and two others returned to university and may come to work with us upon graduation.
Did you have any hesitations in applying to take on an intern?
We were concerned about how motivated they would be. But this was not the case. They were great and so hard working.
What would you say to other businesses considering the scheme but have their own hesitations?
Take the risk. Provide REAL work and you will be rewarded! We would have taken on 10 more! We STRONGLY recommend the Internship Programme to be extended. We would take on more and I am sure we will bring more into full-time employment.
Why did you apply for the Programme?
The programme provided a good opportunity to work in a field that I studied at university - there is a lot more accessible job opportunities here on the Island.
Where did you complete your placement and what was the project about?
I completed my placement at Memory Lane Games, learning new technologies and applying this to developing an app.
What are the benefits of the programme for students/young adults?
Getting your foot in the door in a field of work you studied for.
How did you settle into your placement?
Very well, great environment, very welcoming.
Would you recommend the Internship Programme to other students?
100% - I already have!
Hiring students and recent graduates is a great way to secure the brightest talent in the island.
